Security Innovation Expands
Application Security and Quality Education Curriculums

Application Security Research & Training Leader Answers Demand for Practical
Knowledge for Application Developers

WILMINGTON, Mass.-August 30, 2005-Security Innovation, the independent industry leader in application security testing, research and training, today announced that it has dramatically expanded its application security education curriculum. New courses have been introduced to broaden the focus beyond post-deployment application testing; they will also address the needs of developers in solving security problems at the desktop and prior to product release-those areas which are most costly to fix. Security Innovation is working on additional expansions including specific modules on Microsoft Windows security, Linux security, Java security and management/CIO-level security awareness courses.

"Security Innovation's training curriculum addresses all phases of the software development lifecycle. Their experts are not only on the cutting edge of secure application testing and development, but they can also convey that knowledge in a practical way," said Chad Mason, manager, Test Engineering at Choice Hotels. "We can apply the material immediately and can see results quickly. Time and again, Security Innovation has proven its value to our software quality teams and our customers."

Security Innovation's customers are responding well to the new training offerings: Microsoft licensed three of the new courses to be delivered to engineers around the world via their state-of-the-art e-learning system; Cisco contracted Security Innovation to customize two courses to accommodate its U.S. engineers' needs; and ING purchased two courses as part of a nine-month consulting and training engagement which begins this month.

"Tying training courses to the various phases of the software development lifecycle (requirements, design, development, test and deploy) is exactly what the industry is demanding," said Theresa Lanowitz, research director at Gartner, Inc.. "Organizations must have a clear direction on how to plan, develop and sustain best practices of building more reliable and secure applications from the beginning of the cycle. Application security is the definitive quality assurance issue, which is why top software companies around the world are committing resources to comprehensive testing and training in this area."

Security Innovation builds its curriculum around its extensive expertise in application security, including the company's new books, "How to Break Web Software" and "The Software Vulnerability Guide." In addition to the core set of training courses, the curriculum now also includes:

  • "Fundamentals of Creating Secure Code"
  • "Security Testing Boot Camp"
  • "How to Break Web Software Security"
  • Attacker Techniques Exposed: Threats, Exploits and Vulnerabilities"

"We have noticed a void in the needs of customers from a security perspective. In addition to a lack of good application security knowledge, their developers, testers and CSOs are hungry for resources and effective educational programs," said Dr. Herbert Thompson, chief security strategist of Security Innovation. "Companies must build the expertise and methodologies required to maintain the most secure applications. They are looking for more than one course; they are looking for an ongoing partnership to continuously monitor and refresh their internal skills."
