Security Innovation to Present
"Hackerland Challenge" at RSA Europe 2005
Security Testing Firm Partners with RSA to Demonstrate
Importance of Web Application Security
WILMINGTON, Mass.—October 14, 2005—Security Innovation,
the independent industry leader in application security testing,
research and training, and RSA Security will be co-sponsoring an
interactive competition titled ‘Hackerland’ at RSA Europe 2005 on
October 17-19 in Vienna, Austria. The ultimate hands-on test of
software security skills, Hackerland will assess knowledge and
expertise in the area of Web application security. The winner of the
Hackerland challenge will be announced at the show.
Participants in Hackerland must uncover both common and obscure
security flaws in a Web site built expressly for the challenge. An
accompanying answer sheet will guide participants to the areas where
susceptibilities reside. The winner will be the participant who has
proven his/her outstanding skills in identifying and exploiting
vulnerabilities in software security. This demonstration will
testify to the importance of application security, as it is
estimated by Gartner that 70% of security vulnerabilities exist at
the application layer.
What: Hackerland at RSA Europe, 2005
When: October 17-19, 2005
Where: Hackerland Booth 19, Austria Center, Vienna

The Hackerland challenge will allow participants of all skill levels
to try their hand at locating security vulnerabilities. Educational
information on Web-specific vulnerabilities and testing from various
organizations will be available at the Hackerland booth, which will
aid participants in their efforts.
“Although Hackerland is designed as a simulated challenge,
participants will come away with a strong understanding of the types
of vulnerabilities often found in Web applications, and an
appreciation of the difficulty in building secure applications and
avoid common mistakes that lead to security vulnerabilities,” said
Ed Adams, CEO of Security Innovation.
“At Security Innovation, we have found that it is critical to
address security vulnerabilities at the application level. The
Hackerland challenge will demonstrate how sophisticated application
design must become in order to preclude these weaknesses,” said Dr.
Herbert Thompson, chief security strategist of Security Innovation.
“This kind of demonstration adds excitement and tremendous value to
not only the participants but also all of the RSA show attendees.
Hackerland will bring to light the complex challenges that
application developers must address. Participants will be able to
take this experience back to their organizations and conduct better
internal testing.”
